I was pretty sure they didn't use "New Britain" for one of their colonies and had a quick look. According to the German Wikipedia, New Britain was called Neupommern (New Pomerania, after the German state Pomerania), and the division into "East" and "West" provinces seems to date back only to 1966. Of course, I don't know if either term was ever used by the locals at that time. It's curious that traditions like "Oktoberfest" continue to exist after 100 years (or was it a recent re-invention like everywhere else) – anyway, enjoy the beer!
Interesting about the names. I was just reading an old document, a translation from German, about New Ireland. They must have made the mistake of translating the names of the islands, or rather, substituting the current names. The East and West division of New Britain goes further back than 1966 (it was in place when I first arrived in Rabaul in 1963) but initially that might have been a division of a New Britain District into two sub-districts, with the division into two Districts (and now Provinces) taking place in 1966. Interesting (to me, anyway! :)).

Oktoberfest is a revival although I seem to remember certain raffish elements engaging in excessive beer drinking in October back in the day; there was quite a solid little German community back in the 1960s centered around a company called Breckwoldt and the Catholic Mission which still has a strong German influence and support. We see quite a few German cultural tourists too.

Last week I met a Korean guy searching for "the old German cemetery". He says the only books in Korean about the islands are tourist guide books and the like; he wants to write the definitive book in Korean on the subject!
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:THE TROUBLE NOW IS that I need help to make Add Transparency the default again. Having switched it off, it is reluctant to come back on unless I switch it on when I open each image! And I don’t want to do that. I use it quite a bit and I NEVER erase to the background color. Help, someone, please! If I don’t have it as a default then don't use it for a while, I am likely to forget how to invoke it. Anno bloody Domini and all that.
Afaik, PL never adds transparency to a picture by itself. You'll always have to turn it on – either explicitly, e.g. by using "Layer Properties …" or by ticking the "Transparency" checkbox in the layer attributes, or implicitly – e. g. the Auto-Transparency tool turns on transparency. Layers created by "New Layer" are also transparent by default.[/quote]
That’s weird, Burkhard, because I'm sure I've been getting transparency attached when I open a pic and I haven’t known until today about adding transparency in Layer Properties!!! (Do I hear widespread disbelievinf muttering in the background? It’s true!) Further, when I initially tried PTLensEdit as an External App, it refused to work with the pix I opened because they had the Alpha thing happening!

In fact, adding transparency in PL has been a niggle with me! I've always liked Canvas's approach -- it has "Add Transparency" as a first level menu item to which I added a keybard shortcut. Which I could do the same in PL. Seems the best I can do is add a shortcut to open Layer Properties.

Layer attributes? Now you’ve moved into alien territory for me again! Where do I find "layer attributes"?

I dunno about that. Although there is no tool that I'm aware of that will invisibly clone or patch radically different colours into each other, the Patch Tool worked quite well with complicated subject areas:
It's a great way to get a very good (and fast) starting point for object removal. With those fishes, all I needed to do was use a few quick clicks with the Replacement Tool to smooth out a couple of transition areas.

Of course, it makes no sense to ask for an indicator of the source area since the entire image is the source and you're watching in real time what will be patched into the initial selection.
Hiya Ken

Very cool! But "the entire image is the source"? I rather thought it was an area around where you clicked. Where did you click in your fish pic?

I like the ability to send to an external program. :D

For use with LightZone : you have to chose Preferences : Save LightZone file as "TIFF" and save with overwriting the original file from Photoline. ;-)

Is it possible to send the file in a other format (PNG o JPG) to the external application?

For example, FotoSketcher does not open TIFF files.
Les Français utilisent aussi Photoline !

Thanks for the additional insight into use of this tool.

Wow, you really want the attributes panels open at all times - much, MUCH faster and efficient than that old-fashioned layer properties dialogue.
View-->Panels-->Layer Attributes. This opens the attributes panels for Document, Page, and Layer. I always keep the Document and Layer ones open myself.

In the layer attributes panel you can quickly flick transparency on or off for layers. Also very handy to numerically change layer properties such as scaling and position. And the anti-aliasing can be controlled on a per-layer basis. Align pattern fixes the texture/pattern.
With layer groups you can draw the group isolated from the rest of the layer stack, which is essential if you wish to create grouped layer masks with vector objects and so on.

For vector objects you can turn on pixel alignment, which is great for web and screen graphic design. And layer styles can also be controlled in the layer attributes and set relative to the page, group or layer!
And you can add coloured labels to your layers as well this way.

The document attributes show the active lasso's properties (which can be double-clicked to change the lasso's properties), and quickly switch between document and picture mode.

Life does get much more convenient with these two panels around in your workspace. I hardly (never?) touch the layer properties window anymore.

Good grief -- well, I can see lots of good information as you describe, but … ah, gotcha on the adding transparency. And clicking on the document tab gives me the EXIF data much more easily. Oh well! :)

My habit has been to have the Tool Settings, Picture Info, Layers/Channels, Actions, and Undo panels open. I don’t know why I have Picture Info open, I have no idea how to use it and never actually refer to it. Anyway, it is closed now and the Attributes panel is open.

I work exclusively on a 15" lap top screen these days so there is not that much acreage available for too many panels.

In addition, as I have remarked myself a number of times, I am a pretty lightweight user of PL. Lots of the stuff you guys get up to just leaves me goggling in disbelief! :)

Many thanks for this pointer. Try looking up "layer attributes" or "layer attributes panel" in the PL help. :(

Btw., in the new PL 18, you can rearrange the tabs in the various panels – for instance, you could drag "Picture Info" into the Attributes panel to form a fourth tab. Or create a panel with two tabs for "Undo" and "Actions". In that way, you can save screen real estate while keeping lots of panels easily accessible.

On Mac OS that is quite easy: In the menu open "Help" and type "layer attributes" in the "search"-box. It will show you the menu entry (I really like this search function).

The search function of the Apple Help Center is definitely strange: There is a chapter named "The Layer Attributes" in the help files (chapter 4.11), nevertheless the Help Center doesn't list it in its top results. If I am showing all results, it appears at place 11.

Searching in HELP on "layer attributes" gets me "4.8 The Attributes Dialogue" at number 7 in the results.

The HELP search box will not allow the use of quotes to restrict search to the complete terms -- you can enter them but it deletes them when it searches.

Searching in the MANUAL in Preview on "layer attributes" (full term used when quotes included) takes me directly to "4.11 The Layer Attributes" which is the same content as 4.8 in the HELP!!!

4.8 = 4.11??? Please, guys, CONSISTENCY!!!

BUT -- the discussion of what the Layer Attributes panel does seems to be mostly about vector layers and does NOT mention adding or removing transparency.

Can "Add Transparency" be made a menu item so that it can be switched on and off with a keyboard shortcut? :)

If you mainly want a keyboard shortcut, you can use an action (attached) and assign a keyboard shortcut to that action (Preferences -> Usage -> Keyboard Layout, the actions follow after the menu entries). Note that my action only adds an alpha channel, but of course an alpha channel can be removed in a similar way.

This is the old help. Mac OS has the tendency to cache old help files. It is said, that this mainly happens, if you have multiple versions of an application installed.

In order to clear the help cache, you have to delete all folders in ~/Library/Caches, that start with "com.apple.help".

Oh dear -- you must wonder about us all -- well, me anyway -- Martin. Deleted PL17 and the Help showed up correctly. My apologies for discomfiture you must have experienced.

On, on, to Oktoberfest!

Good grief. Of course. I wonder if my mind will get faster than my mouth before I die?

Done. Now all I have to remember is command-option-control-t and command-option-control-shift-t !!!

Thank you, Burkhard.
