Experiment 06 -- B&W Conversion: Arches Nat'l Park

Experiment 05's B&W conversion was so informative, that I thought that another one could also be interesting.

The site is Microsoft's free downloads area for desktop wallpapers, so I doubt if there will be any problem using the image for experimentation. Being able to work on the full-size, full-resolution image should help with the various adjustments, too.

This image is by no means the prettiest one available there, but I chose it because it promises to be a difficult one to convert into an excellent B&W image because the bulk of the red colours are so similar and the lighting on the cliff face is so flat . In other words, it's naturally effective as a colour image, but maybe not so much as a B&W image.

As soon as you publish it, it's not private use, afaik. In particular, imo, you (or the Hubers? their ISP?) are redistributing the original image. Far too many lawyers try to make money from these things, so I prefer not to publish my results, and I'm not even sure if we are under US or German legislation here. But of course, it's everybody's decision.

I think Burkhard may be drawing a reasonable conclusion with regard to the property rights of this image. I, for one, do not wish to violate anyone's rights and/or the laws under which this website/forum falls. If a moderator for these boards or, maybe, even the Hubers themselves could comment along these lines or remove this thread altogether that would be helpful. Thinking about it, if I could delete my own posts in this thread I would.

That doesn't make sense. That convoluted reasoning implies that one could never show one's comments, interpretations or personal use of anything to anyone -- "Hey, I bought a great photograph and found a really nice frame for it, but I can't show you how it looks in my room, and if you visit me I'll have to remove the phtotograph before letting you in."

Absolutely not. The original image is not being redistributed at all. The original image can only be accessed by following the link to the originating site, which contains all relevant info regarding the originator. What is being shown is a much reduced, lower quality representation of the original.

Since it's the Hubers who are ultimately responsible for this forum, perhaps they should address your concerns in the "Posting Guidelines". I fully accept beforehand their opinion about this for this forum.
