Geoff, this smartphone app seems to be an adaptation of a feature that has been a part of a couple of PhotoLine competitors through at least the last two versions. There are variations -- to remove an object and leave the same size image or to remove an object and squeeze the size of the image.

There apparently has been little demand here. Most serious amateur photographers would ascertain the problem or need when shooting and take care of it in the first stage of the workflow.

There apparently has been little demand here. Most serious amateur photographers would ascertain the problem or need when shooting and take care of it in the first stage of the workflow.

In any case, PL 17 has the "remove object" feature (the variant which replaces part of the image) and also a "liquid rescale" which shrinks the image leaving out unimportant information. I use the former a lot (mostly in the form of the "remove object" brush) when retouching.

But imo, the smartphone app does something different: my guess is that takes multiple exposures and replaces unwanted content in the main image by patches from the other images. This is a bit similar to the old technique of using a long exposure time (several secs, with a strong grey filter) so that moving people just create a very weak blur. Maybe a clever mix of both, if the Eiffel tower example is genuine – you wouldn't want to wait till the picknickers move.

In any case, you could do this manually in PL using layers if you wanted to. More work, but probably better results as well.

It seems to me your summary of how it works is correct -- a bunch of exposures then deletes what is not common to them all, or perhaps more accurately, creates a composite of what is common to them all. It's clever! In some respects, it's also kind of silly but it is gadgets like that which bring in buyers. I certainly wouldn't want to see the Hubers wasting a lot of time on such a process but the fact that it can run on a phone suggests it is not too heavy in terms of programming, so if it could be added, hey, that's a bonus.

I would rather they spent more time on improving HDR and the smart selection features.
